2013 Austin MotoGP Broadcast Coverage
Covering the worldwide motor sports scene, Jonathan Green spends more time on an airplane than he does at home. It’s Spain one weekend, Japan the next, and Germany, that could be a week later – there’s always a place to be.
But when travels relent, Green, a native of London, can usually be found hop-scotching around his adopted home town of Austin, Texas. He’s not alone.
Austin is also home to the inaugural Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas, where Green and the FOX Sports’ SPEED broadcast team are set for live coverage of the MotoGP World Championship’s first visit to the newly minted Circuit of the Americas (CoTA) on Sunday, April 21 (2:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. CT).
Coverage starts with qualifying on Saturday, April 20 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT. A half-hour pre-race show leads into live coverage from round two of the MotoGP World Championship at 3 p.m. ET, followed by MotoGP Moto 2 at 4:30 p.m. ET, once NASCAR Victory Lane wraps from Kansas Speedway.
Jonathan Green says: “I think it’s going to be awesome. If you go to Spa, you have to see Eau Rouge. If you go to Silverstone, I have to be at Becketts. Many circuits have iconic corners. Where at Circuit of the Americas, and they designed it this way, they took the best parts of some of the great, classic circuits. So pretty much anywhere you go – it’s good.”
Green’s passion for Austin is also evident. The Texas state capital is the 13th largest city in the United States, an alluring hot spot for music, culture, international business and university life.
Jonathan Green says: “I have had a long association with Texas, which goes back to me going to college in Dallas – many, many moons ago. I’ve always had a love of all things Texas from Austin to Dallas and Houston.
“About five years ago my parents retired to Austin, so obviously I was coming to visit them, and kept up with my old friends from college. Having been here, growing up, and remembering how beautiful Austin was, I played rugby here when I was in college and totally fell in love with it. I’m also a live music fan, a blues fan with Stevie Ray Vaughn being absolutely my hero. It just seemed to make sense to come here.
“I still have my base in the U.K., and I’m there as much and I am here, as I travel around the world all the time. Austin is another great stop off for me,” he added.
In addition to Green providing lap-by-lap narration; he’s partnered in the booth with AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Scott Russell, while series analyst, Greg White, covers everything going on up and down pit road.
Long-time voice Bob Varsha is hosting the entire event for SPEED.
CoTA: America’s Intersection of International Motor Sport
Even after visiting some of the most famous race circuits around the world like Germany’s Hockenheim and Britain’s Silverstone, Green has found that CoTA takes a back seat to no one. His recent tour around the facility with two-time World Superbike champion and Texas resident, Colin Edwards, only solidified that view.
Jonathan Green says: “We both rode around it, just at slow speed and I basically got his take on it. He just couldn’t stop talking about it. He even called me when he got back and said, ‘That was one of the most fun days I’ve had in ages.’ As he said, they’ve got it right; they’ve designed a circuit that I think works for both cars and bikes.
“It’s still a Herman Tike circuit, so it’s designed for Formula One and it has a lot of long straights and short stops, which is how overtaking is created in Formula One. But at the same time, there’s a lot of flowing parts and the stadium section, which is sort of based on Hockenheim in the great days of World Superbike and MotoGP there.”
The season-opening Grand Prix of Qatar (Losail Circuit) also provided what could be a preview of a close, season-long battle for the MotoGP World Championship. Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo’s dominating performance was only overshadowed by Valentino Rossi’s resurgence. Yet, Honda dominated early season testing at CoTA. The upcoming race weekend may be one to remember.
Jonathan Green says: “It could be epic because it comes on the back of what was a fantastic start to the season. Lots of results and lots of things to talk about, but when one stands there, one thing stands out; Valentino Rossi is back, and back with a vengeance. He’s coming to Austin and is going to put on a show.
“We have a championship that’s wide open now. With (Cal) Crutchlow in the mix, and obviously, (Marc) Marquez in the mix; add that to Rossi, (Dani) Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo, suddenly, you have a very, very exciting championship. Don’t count out (American racers) Nicky Hayden and Ben Spies, either.”
